Technical approval (BTZ)

Proof of quality and safety

The BTZ for the domestic market

The technical approval (BTZ) is proof that a construction product meets the technical requirements in Austria and can be used safely. It enables manufacturers to place products on the domestic market with legal certainty that are not covered by harmonized European standards (hEN) or European Technical Assessments (ETAs) or that deviate from a harmonized standard or from the national regulations listed in the Building Materials List ÖA.

In addition, a BTZ can be specified as mandatory in the ÖA list of building materials.

However, a BTZ can also be applied for voluntarily – for example, because a manufacturer can expect greater market acceptance as a result or wants to protect itself legally. However, voluntary BTZs do not entitle the manufacturer to use the ÜA installation mark.

The technical approval is regulated in Article 21 of the “Agreement pursuant to Art. 15a B-VG on cooperation in the construction sector and the provision of construction products on the market and their use” or in the corresponding provincial implementation regulations and applies in all Austrian provinces.

The three types of BTZ:

Binding BTZ
according to building material list ÖA

It serves as the basis for registration certificates and the mandatory ÜA marking of construction products for which there are no harmonized European standards and which are listed in the Construction Materials List ÖA.

BTZ as
detection profile

For products according to the Building Materials List ÖA that deviate significantly from the published regulations (standards, OIB principles of use, guidelines).

Voluntary
BTZ

For products that are not included in the Building Materials List ÖA and are therefore not subject to ÜA.

The voluntary BTZ therefore does not allow the installation mark ÜA to be affixed.
