The European Drinking Water Directive (EU) 2020/2184 brings a new European certification and labeling for construction products in contact with drinking water from 31.12.2026.

Important to know: During the transitional period until 31.12.2032, products with existing approvals from a Member State may continue to be placed on the market and installed.

The transition period applies to all products for which

  • a registration certificate for the ÜA marking in accordance with Building Materials List ÖA, Section 15.2.1, 15.2.2 or 15.2.3 has been issued by 31.12.2026 and
  • the ongoing external monitoring was carried out without interruption.

These products do not require EU certification until 31.12.2032, provided they bear a valid ÜA marking and comply with Austrian regulations.

Please note: New registration certificates can no longer be issued after 31.12.2026. However, existing registrations can be extended. Additional product types not previously covered cannot be included in existing registrations after 31.12.2026.

Construction products in contact with drinking water that are not covered by the ÜA marking requirement – for example terminal tapping valves – can also use the transition period until 31.12.2032 if a voluntary ÖVGW certification has been issued for them. The same conditions apply as for the ÜA marking (issued before 31.12.2026, ongoing external monitoring, no new approvals after 31.12.2026).

Products without ÜA marking and without ÖVGW approval will require European certification and drinking water labeling in Austria from 31.12.2026.
